The beauty of professional paint

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

"Professional grade" watercolor paint tends to perform head and shoulders above "student grade" paint (and someday I will make a whole post about my disagreement with these terms). Most student grade paint tends to be rather opaque and chalky, and when you drop it onto a wet surface it often doesn't flow very smoothly. You end up having to push it around with your brush to get it to blend and mingle with others. But just look at how effortlessly this professional paint that I'm using disperses into a wet surface!

It almost explodes onto the paper, and blends out softly and beautifully all on its own. The paints I'm using are by Daniel Smith, but any professional grade watercolor paint will have similar beautiful results. If you're just starting to get into watercolor and all you have is student grade paint, I recommend you find one professional tube or half pan in your favorite color and compare it with your student grade paint to see the difference. Professional paints are unequaled in terms of their vibrant color (a heavier pigment load), transparency, and flow.

Meanwhile, this rainbow pine row is just a blast to play with. Have fun!
